So Jane Lynch was in Target again yesterday. I saw her as I was walking past the Electronics Department. She looked a little lost. Most people in Target these days look lost since we've remodeled much of the store and shifted departments around. I went up to her, as I do to all lost looking people, and asked, "Can I help you find something?" She smiled at me and said, "Thanks, yes. Where would I find a funnel?" "Oh," I responded, "That would be in the Housewares Department over on the other side of the store around aisle B30 or so." "Thanks," she replied and smiled at me. I started walking away and she called out again, "One more thing." "Yes?" I asked. "Brita filters or Pur filters. Where would those be?" "Also in Housewares. Aisle B24." She thanked me again and as she started walking away, two giddy looking teenage girls walked up to her and said they were huge fans. I regretted not telling her I was a fan too, but I didn't want to be all gushing over her. I wanted her to have a nice normal shopping experience.
But when I spotted her over in the Domestics Department later on, she was signing autographs for a brother and sister. She was so gracious. I was in awe. She didn't get mad when people stopped her to tell her they were fans. She simply smiled and thanked them and continued shopping. The last time she was in the store, she was with a large posse of people (assistants maybe? or just friends?) but this time she was alone. People unfamiliar with "Glee!" didn't even give her a second glance. She was so chill and down to earth, wearing a button down loose-fitting blouse, khakis, and glasses. Her everyday appearance outside the show stands in stark juxtaposition with her character on "Glee!" Anyways, I digress. Back in the Housewares Department I was assisting other people and noticed her looking around the aisles. I finished with the person I was helping and made my way over to her, pretending to organize potholders and dish towels. We were alone. Now was my chance. "Hey, I just wanted to say I'm a really huge fan too. You're like awesome," I said to her. I could feel my cheeks burning up. So embarrassing! But I was so nervous. "Thanks. I appreciate it," she said. I wasn't really sure what to do so I awkwardly walked away. But I was in heaven! A couple minutes later I saw her again. "So how about showing me where exactly those funnels would be," she said kindly. "Sure thing. Follow me. There should be some right over here. They're pretty basic cheapy ones though." "Oh, that will be fine," she said, as I pointed to a set of Chefmate funnels for $1.34. She thanked me again and headed for the check out line. And I thought the highlight of my day was going to be watching "The Kids Are Alright" at the Arclight (don't get me wrong, it was a great film, but spending a few minutes helping Jane Lynch find funnels and water filters totally tops anything.)
